GABRIEL VAN HELSING
Van Helsing: Bless me father for I have...
Cardinal Jinette: Sinned! Yes, I know. You're very good at it. You shattered the Rose Window.
Van Helsing: Well, not to split hairs, but it was Mr. Hyde who did the shattering.
Cardinal Jinette: Thirteenth century. Over six hundred years old! I wish you a week in hell for that.
Van Helsing: It would be a nice reprieve.
Cardinal Jinette: Don't get me wrong. Your results are unquestionable, but your methods attract far too much attention. Wanted posters. We are not pleased.
Van Helsing: Do you think I like being the most wanted man in Europe? Why don't you and the order do something about it?
Cardinal Jinette: Because we do not exist.
Van Helsing: Well then neither do I.
Cardinal Jinette: When we found you crawling up the steps of this church, half dead, it was clear to all of us that you had been sent to do God's work.
Van Helsing: Why can't He do it Himself?

::Appearance
Gabriel Van Helsing stands tall and proud. He wears a worn leather trench coat, a brown fedora, and equally worn traveling cloths underneath. His face is a proud one, with a strong and chiseled nose and jaw. Deep hazel eyes that are apt to turn brown always show his emotions, whether he wants them to or not. He is lean and seems slim, but under his clothing is a physique that most would rival. Muscular and strong, he can compete with the best of them.
Recently he's taken to wearing a darker set of clothing, black to match his favorite duster, to blend in with the shadows on certain hunts. His moods are also easy to tell, and though he's been hurt and tries to close himself off, he wears his heart on his sleeve.
Alternate Forms: Though his alternate form does have the ability to halt in the first man-wolf form that he fought Dracula in, he usually shifts to the full-blown wolf form. A huge midnight black wolf, he is beautiful in his own right. Muscles ripple beneath a pitch coat, and ivory white fangs stand out all the clearer. Eyes still appear almost human, though they have a decided feral look about them [more-so than the man-wolf form].
Since when does he have time for hobbies? [If he could, he'd probably spend the time drinking, relaxing.... and then he'd get bored and probably go back to work. He's not able to relax fully enough to enjoy himself.] ::Hobbies
Claims to be neutral, but he's definitely good - chaotic, but good. ::Alignment
::Personality Exploration
Always ready with a charming smile or a sarcastic comment, Gabriel doesn't like to do things by the book. He'd rather feel things out himself, and often as not kills the 'monster' that the Vatican has sent him after. After his last adventure/assignment, he's sobered slightly, still grieving the loss of Anna. Still, that doesn't stop him from practical jokes or admiring and trying to convince Carl to make him 'one of those' whenever he sees a weapon he particularly likes.
His own past still troubles him, as the nightmares cause deep depressions and funks that it's hard to pull him out of. But as always, even when slightly darker/more sober, he's got his biting wit, stubbornness, and determination that get him through day to day. He is a loyal friend, and so long as you don't betray him, he'll be a friend for life. He does try to stay aloof from others though, as he feels attachments may endanger him [and others] when he does his job. He is well known for his temper getting away from him, and this has only increased with his new 'curse'. The werewolf half causes many problems, and these issues sometimes cause him a great deal of pain, guilt, and trouble. He is slowly learning to live with things, though his resentment toward the Order continues to grow.
::Skills & Weaknesses
Van Helsing is incredibly strong, being able to fight back against beasts who have many times the abilities and strengths of a mere mortal. Flashbacks to a previous time make him recall things that he'd rather not, though sometimes these flashes can actually help him in the current assignment. He is exceptionally skilled with a sword, crossbow, gun, hand-to-hand combat, and many other things. Most any type of weapon he'll be able to figure out at least the basics within days. He's fairly good at problem solving. He has the typical werewolf strengths [speed, healing, etc.], and with the help of Carl he's also learned to fully control his wolf form and abilities, stubbornness, resourceful, high speed, stamina, endurance, and senses.
Van Helsing is known for his vicious fighting. He uses what he has on hand, in addition to his wide arsenal of weapons, and though he fights fairly, many people consider him a murderer. He is skilled with every weapon he carries, and is quick to pick up on how to use something more effectively.
He is brash, forward, and charges head first into battle, often forgetting his own mortality when dealing with the creatures he's sent to kill or bring back. He has a snarky sense of humor that can and often is used to piss his opponents off, though he reserves this for when he's at a disadvantage and is trying to get the upper hand.
When he loses his temper, he is almost a berserker, though he stops short of this by the mere fact that he can and does know how to control the anger and reactions, while a true berserker can not.
Gabriel's biggest weaknesses are an unknown past, a decided depression that hits strong and hard when it does hit, touchy about his past, typical werewolf weaknesses -- the full moon forces a shift, though he can change at any time, silver -- though not deadly to him, as with a regular wolf, it still injures him to the point he may be down and out for a while. He can be killed by holy and supernatural weapons, but regular weapons will simply slow him down.
Gabriel's weapons and armor:
Gabriel will not wear armor, though his duster does lend itself as fairly decent protection.
Dual Pistols: a matched pair of revolvers (the make of the revolvers is uncertain, possibly Colt Peacemakers or Webley and Scott .455. The pistols have brass knuckles integrated into the handgrips that allow them to double as punching weapons. The weapon can be loaded with silver bullets for killing werewolves.
Tojo Blades: For hand-to-hand fighting, Van Helsing uses a pair of identical miniature handheld buzzsaws: each weapon features a circular blade with retractable teeth, attached to a handgrip, with a pneumatic lever that, when squeezed, causes the blade to spin to improve its cutting power. The blade can also be detached from the handgrip and thrown through the air, similar to a Japanese shuriken.
Crossbow: An invention of Carl's, Van Helsing's crossbow is stainless steel, gas-propelled automatic crossbow that fires quarrels at high velocity from a drum magazine. The weapon is capable of selective fire (single shot or fully automatic), and can be collapsed for carrying and storage. The weapon is, however, bulky and awkward to reload.
Shotgun: Van Helsing also carries a sawed-off, pump action shotgun.
Silver Stake: the stake is retractable, and thus reusable;
Crucifix,
Blow Gun filled with tranquilizer darts,
Holy Water Flask,
Rings of Garlic,
Elephant Gun: A long-berrelled rifle with long rage and devastating power,
Twin Scimitars: Two long swords, used for melee combat, like the Tojo blades, with a greater range.
Other gadgets include a spray bottle filled with knockout gas, and a powerful gas-propelled grapnel gun.
Van Helsing's family is unknown, and he refuses to consider the order a family. Carl is his closest and only friend. Enemies include most of the known world, the Order [sometimes], any of those he hunts, family/friends of those he's hunted, and Dracula. ::Connections of Importance
None ::Pets
::History
Not much is known about Van Helsing's past, save for what Dracula revealed. Years before, he himself killed Dracula, who then made a deal with the devil to remain in some form of living. Much of what happened before that date and after are blanks in Gabriel's mind. Once in a while, a brief flash of a war, or something worthy of a strong memory might surface. [I'm going more with the hints of him being an angel - Gabriel specifically - who was sent to earth minus memories to teach him a lesson. This will be explored through RP.]
Gabriel turned up on the steps of the Vatican with no memories and quite wounded. Taking him in, they determined that he was there to atone for some terrible sin in his past. Gabriel has always suspected they know more about his past than they will let on. Sent on mission after mission to dispatch those the Vatican has labeled as monsters, he struggles with their deaths when they revert to their former selves.
A year or so before the Dracula incident, he was sent to London to deal with Edward Hyde. Unable to finish the creature or subdue him to bring him in, the towering Hyde escaped, though wounded. Some time later, Gabriel tracked him to Paris, where they fought viciously, ending with Hyde shattering the Rose window, and reverting to let Dr. Jekyll fall to his death.
Frustrated, he returned empty handed to Rome. Scolded for his actions, he was in a bad mood when he received his next assignment. Carl tried to cheer him up, but was snapped at repeatedly. Eventually the two left for Transylvania, to help Anna defeat Dracula before her family was denied their salvation. A long and twisted road waited ahead, with the Frankenstein monster causing problems, as did Anna's brother--now a werewolf. Becoming cursed himself because of Velkan, Van Helsing at first thought himself doomed. When he found that there was a cure, -and- that it would take a werewolf bite to kill the vampire, he determined to do both at Castle Dracula.
They were somewhat successful in their endeavor, but at the loss of Anna. After setting her burial pyre alight, he traveled back to Rome, heavy hearted, to await his next orders, Carl trying repeatedly to pick his spirit up. Still cursed as a werewolf - the antidote had only given him his mind, he at first believed that he too would be 'dealt with' by the Vatican, but it seemed they had other plans for him. Sent on many different missions, and now with the werewolf aspect helping him, he has been slowly recovering, his mood picking up, and he's finally moving on. [Much to Carl's relief.]
He has recently been spending time back home in Paris, though he's still cautious due to the damned wanted posters everywhere when he happened across some abnormally thick and suspicious fog. Being himself, Gabriel went to investigate and found himself wandering through the myst and into Carlisle. He didn't like the look of the creatures on his way there and has resolved to find a way to hunt them to ensure they can't and won't bother the citizens of the town he's now living in.
